MO EP Benefits ALS Through Soccer

Our Chapter Over the September 14th weekend Phi Delta Theta and Sigma Kappa held their annual soccer tournament in support of philanthropic efforts. The tournament generated over $1,200 dollars to be split among the two chapters, each being able to donate $600 to their national philanthropy. Additionally, through the hard work of Ryan Jones – Community Service Chairman – and generous donations parents and fans in attendance, the chapter raised an additional $200. Phi Delta Theta will present a check for $800 to the ALS Association on September 29th during the annual Springfield Walk.

The soccer tournament was once again a success as the hard work and organization of the event led to 63 hours of recorded community service for the Brothers. Additionally, the tournament had 14 Fraternities and 4 Sororities compete to take home the gold. Phi Delt fell just short has they lost in the semi-finals by 1 goal leading them to take 3rd place among the men’s bracket. More importantly, however, the chapter acknowledged that the real winners are the ALS Association and those affected by Lou Gehrig’s disease. Lastly, despite falling just short of their goal to win the tournament, the brothers still had a fantastic and enjoyable experience and look forward to the Spring soccer season when the can claim redemption.

Annual Tournament to Benefit Foundation

2012 Eric Westacott TournamentRecently, Missouri Epsilon undergraduate and alumni Phis took part in the annual Eric Westacott Foundation Golf Tournament. The Eric Westacott golf classic benefits both a deserving St. Louis individual who has been affected by a spinal cord injury and one of our own brothers, Eric Westacott.

This year’s tournament benefited Officer Michael Vernon of the Florrisant, Missouri police department. Officer Vernon was injured in the line of duty when he was shot and the bullet lodged into his spinal cord. The tournament was able to raise and donate over $10,000 to Officer Vernon as he works towards recovery.

Missouri Epsilon is Saving Lives

Phi Delt Blood DriveRecently, the active Brothers gathered to take part in a great cause and did more than their fair share.

The Brothers participated in the annual MSU blood drive and were the premier fraternity for the event. Brothers from all classes stepped up to do their part to help the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks collect almost 1,000 pints of blood.

The Brothers were the spotlight Fraternity during the event as they not only had 31 Brothers donate blood, but, had 38 Brothers donate their time to pass out flyers, hang posters, recruit donors, and set-up/clean-up the event each day. Through their efforts the chapter not only collected almost 100 hours of community service but they helped to save nearly 3,000 lives because each pint of blood is estimated to save 3 lives.

The effort of the chapter and the Community Blood Center of the Ozarks is truly remarkable considering the impact that this makes on so many lives. After learning that blood lasts only 40 days, due to an expiration date, the Brothers reiterated their pleasure in assisting such a great organization and look forward to helping again next year.

Chapter Walks in Honor of Brother Gehrig

Sep 6, 2012

Our Chapter On September 29, 2012 the brothers of MO EP walked alongside the ALS Association in memory of Brother Lou Gehrig and all those affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The annual walk is an effort to raise awareness of ALS and funds for research, cures, and assistance to those already affected by this tragic disease.

This year the brothers had a goal of raising $2,500, however, they went above and beyond, exceeding that goal and raising a total of $2,860! A big thanks is extended to the family of Brother Jordan Tierney, as they generously donated $1,000. Collectively, the chapter held their annual soccer tournament with the ladies of Sigma Kappa, which was the major fundraiser for the team. Moreover, the chapter showed impressive support by having 58 members register online, 48 of those members place donations, 6 clean-up volunteers, and 40 walkers.

This year’s Keith Worthington chapter of ALS had a fundraising goal of $90,000, although with the support of chapters like Missouri Epsilon (who was the 8th highest contributing team) they set a new donation record, exceeding $120,000. Moreover, the Springfield ALS Association instituted a new Greek challenge to the chapters of Missouri State University. Needless to say Phi Delts once again took home the first annual Springfield area ALS Association trophy as they beat out Pi Kappa Alpha. The chapter will be recognized at an awards banquet in November.

The Brothers hard work really paid off as they contributed 58 hours of community service, but more importantly, helped out a great cause that is near and dear to every Phi.

After a revamped and revitalized recruitment process, Missouri Epsilon saw significant growth in not only numbers, but in the quality and character of the young men now regarded as Phikeia’s. Missouri Epsilon recruited and signed 28 Phikeia’s hailing from cities across Missouri, from St. Louis to Kansas City. While Missouri Epsilons recruitment class is slightly smaller than other Fraternities at Missouri State University, the character and nature of the young men is by far number one.

One of the keys to recruitment this year was the chapters impressive rush video, available below. Missouri Epsilon looks to continue their recent growth overall through the future leadership of these young men.

Why Join Phi Delt?

We enjoy life by the help and society of others. Each member joins for their own personal reasons, but each shares the same network of over 167,000 Phi Delts across the country.

Work hard, play hard. Our organization recognizes hard work with nearly $500,000 in scholarships awarded by our International Educational Foundation.

Just as we pledge to better ourselves, we pledge to better our community. Our chapter raised over $2000 to help fight ALS Lou Gehrig’s Disease last year.

If you are interested in joining a Fraternity, take a look through our F.A.Q. page, give us a call, or speak with a representative from the Greek Life office.

Our home at 1107 East Elm has impacted the lives of more than 500 young men who have been initiated into Missouri Epsilon of Phi Delta Theta. It is where we became men. It is a support system that provided lifetime friendships, growing lessons, social opportunities, and simply fond memories. We all gained from our Missouri Epsilon membership. Many of us can say it helped form who we are today.

The Chapter House has served us well. However, time has taken its toll and we must provide our undergraduate men with a safe, comfortable, and up-to-date living facility, we must rebuild. A monumental effort, expense, and sacrifice have allowed us to significantly extend the useful life of 1107 East Elm. We are all excited about this unique time in MoEp’s history and want to share our plans with you now.

$1 Million Needed to Create First-Class Facility

At the advent of this campaign, a small group of alumni studied our long-term housing options and developed a solid strategy to provide a facility that will meet the needs of our undergraduate brothers well into the 21st century. To this end, architect Brian Kubik ’91, consultants, and Phi Delta Theta alumni were engaged to develop a needs assessment, architectural plans, and fundraising goals. These diligent efforts have produced a $1.4 million comprehensive plan to create a first-class residential facility and to ensure the continuity of the legacy that each of us helped build.

Proposed plans for our new home include 11,409 square feet, occupancy and parking for 27, a fire-safety sprinkler system and security features, conveniences of modern technology and wireless Internet access, heating and air conditioning systems, an updated Chapter room, kitchenettes, and plenty of common spaces.

Missouri Epsilon Needs Your Support

Now that the quiet phase of our campaign is complete, early commitments from 73 dedicated Missouri Epsilon alumni and friends total more than $682,000. As we move into the next critical phase of this campaign, we seek support from our entire alumni base to complete this project on time—tentatively August 2013—and on budget. We would also like to thank the 150 brothers, parents, friends, and undergraduates who attended our Founders Day event on April 21. A wonderful time was had by all as we celebrated Missouri Epsilon and announced the news of our capital campaign. Every attendee seemed truly excited about what the future holds for our great fraternity.

As you know, the “To Do What Ought to Be Done…” campaign is not just about securing our future, it is also about honoring our storied past. Thanks to the alumni who came before us, we all had the opportunity to join Missouri Epsilon and be a part of something special. There is little doubt that each of us will forever owe a debt of gratitude for the unique experience and opportunities that the Fraternity provided, not to mention the lifelong friendships that we gained. This campaign presents us with a significant opportunity to give back at a time that matters most.

Greek Week 2012

Brett Lux and David Corwin America’s Calling… and Phi Delt’s responded above and beyond again. Missouri State just completed the annual Greek Week celebrations in which Phi Delta Theta was paired with Alpha Chi Omega and Pi Kappa Phi, in celebrating the remembrance of WWII.

Aside from the annual Greek jam competition with our partners, Phi Delt’s participated in philanthropy events at The Brown Egg, Pickelmans, and Qdoba. David Corwin was the chapter’s Greek week chairman responsible for ensuring the chapter exceeded expectations and was accompanied by our Greek God, Brett Lux.

After working hard all week, the Brothers relaxed with exchanges themed “When I Grow Up” and “Cowboys and Indians”. They also enjoyed a good meal prepared for them by the lovely ladies of Alpha Chi Omega when they had a block party and barbecue.
