  • Active Member: fully initiated member of a fraternity or sorority.
  • Alumni Member: a fraternity or sorority member who has graduated or is no longer in college.
  • Bid: a formal invitation to join a fraternity or sorority.
  • Brother/Sister: a term used by active members of a fraternity or sorority when they are referring to each other.
  • Chapter: the local group of a national fraternal organization.
  • Exchange: a themed social gathering between one or more sororities and one or more fraternities.
  • Formal Recruitment: the period set aside for the structured recruitment period.
  • Fraternity: a Greek organization for men.
  • Initiation: the formal ceremony during which a man or woman begins full membership in a fraternity or sorority.
  • Intake: the process by which NPHC fraternities and sororities recruit new members.
  • Interfraternity Council (IFC): a representative governing body of Greek social fraternities.
  • National: a term referring to the central organization of a given fraternity or sorority.
  • Legacy: a potential member whose grandparents, parents, or brother/sister is a member of a particular fraternity/sorority.
  • Local: a Greek organization that is not affiliated with a national organization.
  • Panhellenic Association: the central governing body of campus social sororities.
  • Philanthropy: a charitable project sponsored by an organization. Each chapter has a local and a national philanthropy.
  • New Member: a member of a fraternity or sorority who has not been initiated.
  • National Pan-Hellenic Council: the campus coordinating body of historically African-American fraternities and sororities.
  • Order of Omega: The national Greek leadership honor organization.
  • Ritual: the traditional beliefs of a fraternity or sorority.
  • Recruitment: the process in which mutual choice and selection occurs to determine fraternity or sorority membership.
  • Recruitment guide/counselor: a person who is available and willing to answer questions a potential member may have about recruitment. This person has completely disaffiliated him/herself from his/her chapter in order to provide objective advice and support.
  • Potential member: a person interested in becoming a member of a fraternity/sorority.
  • Sorority: a Greek organization for women.
